DISTRIBUTION:

The Black-headed Heron (Ardea melanocephala) is natural to Africa. Its distribution includes most of the continent south of the Sahara Dessert. Some individuals cross the desert and are reported in Algeria. Others have made it to Madagascar.


HABITAT:

It is seen in dry fields.


BEHAVIOR:

More active during daytime, but also active at night.


REPRODUCTION:

This species is a colonial breeder. The nest is done on the trees.


DESCRIPTION:

In length it reaches from 85 to 92 cm.


OTHER NAMES:

The Black-headed Heron in Spanish is called “Garza de Cabeza Negra”.
