Ardeola idae

DISTRIBUTION:

The Madagascar Squacco Heron (Ardeola idae) is natural to Africa, Madagascar and some of the islands near by. It nests in Madagascar and Aldabar. Winters some of the islands north of these two and in the African continent.


HABITAT:

Inhabits lakes with tall emerging aquatic vegetation where it can remain secluded.


BEHAVIOR:

Active during daytime.


REPRODUCTION:

Nesting is in colonies of other species of egrets.


FOOD:

The diet consists of fish and aquatic insects.


OTHER NAMES:

The Madagascar Squacco Heron in Spanish is called “Garcilla Malgache”.
